A winter of birds 2013

With the initiative and production of the Ministry for Development of the Negev and the Galilee and the Galilee Development Authority, the Ministry of Tourism, the Society for the Protection of Nature in Israel , KKL, Nature and Parks Authority, Galilee, Golan Height and the Valleys Tourism Association, Rivers and Drainage Authority Kinneret, Rivers and Drainage Authority Southern Jordan, Rivers and Drainage Authority Kishon.

In the months of November and December the Galilee, Golan Heights and the Valleys will be holding a colorful, multi-cultural festival on the growing topic of birding, which will include additional events of nature, sports, art and culture. Several birding sites in the north have joined together to create 4 weeks, rich and full of interesting events on birding and other topics. The events are designed both for the public as well as for ornithologists. It will attract many people to the Galilee, Golan Heights and Valleys area, as well as to tourists' attractions sites and local businesses during the days of the festival.

The festival will include many events, such as: a professional conference on Cranes, the Crane Race, birding cruise and History tours in the Sea of Galilee area, tours and trips in leading birding sites- dramatized tours, twilight tours, sunrise tours, event in Baruch Lake, tourist promoters conference, poetry night on birds hosted by Yoram Rotem. Also, visitors will be able to enjoy perks and attractive accommodation packages, special menus in restaurants and a verity of different tourists' attractions.

En Afek nature reserve:
The En Afek Nature Reserve, in the Acre Valley near the Haifa Bay suburb of Kiryat Bialik, is the last remnant of the Na‘aman Stream wetlands. In winter, when the water level rises, the reserve shelters pelicans, cranes, pygmy cormorants, gray herons and many other species of water fowl.
Special activities for the festival:
Guided tours and ringing birds- bird watching tour at sun rise, encounter with an ornithologist, watching the process of ringing and marking birds and their release, a tour of the water birds, a tour during twilight – watching the birds getting ready for the night.
Festival's end event in En Afek- a musical show with special instruments and bird sounds, participation in bird ringing, acquaintance with the migration phenomena and ways of catching birds.

Hula nature reserve:
The Hula Valley is an important resting and “refueling” place for migrating birds on their annual trip from Europe to Africa and back. Tens of thousands of birds of over 200 species, including cranes, storks, pelicans, cormorants and egrets, stay in the reserve, knowing they can find an abundance of food here and in the Hula Valley in general. Water buffalos graze in certain areas to preserve the open meadow environment. Species that have become extinct in the wild, such as the white-tailed eagle, are also reintroduced in the reserve.
During the festival there will be tours around the nature reserve, dramatized tours, tours with a telescope for watching the birds flying in the nature reserve and getting to know from up close the different birds,

Gamla nature reserve
The Gamla Nature Reserve in the central Golan Heights is a wonderful combination of nature, landscape and historical remains.
Dozens of pairs of Griffon vultures nest in Gamla’s cliffs, the largest colony in the country. Visitors can view the vultures in flight from a cliff-edge observation station

Special activities for the festival:
Observations with a telescope on the vulture's acclimatization cage in which the vultures are getting strong and adjusting before their release to nature. A guided tour to Gamla waterfall, a dramatized tour in which you can experience the old city of Gamla and hear about the biggest vulture's colony and the dangers that threaten it.

Kfar Rupin:
The International Birdwatching Center of the Jordan Valley is located at Kibbutz Kfar Ruppin.
Situated alongside the Jordan River near the town of Beit Shean. it is ideally located near all of the excellent birding sites in northern Israel. This location combined with its mild climate offers great bird watching opportunities all year round.

The Agamon Hula
The Agamon Hula Tourism Park, situated in the heart of the Hula Valley is considered one of the world’s most prominent bird-watching sites. At the park you can follow and observe migrating, courting and nesting birds, as well as other animals according to seasonal variation. A magical lake at the heart of the site allows you to experience nature without cages or partitions.

The Crane Race weekend- the Crane Race is an itiative of the Society for the Protection of Nature that aims to promote ornithology in Israel and the preservation of birds in Agamon Hula. Come and join one of the racing trails.
