2013/2014 ISRAELI OPERA SEASON:
29th SEASON; 10 PRODUCTIONS; 100 PERFORMANCES AND THE ISRAELI OPERA FESTIVAL AT MASADA AND ACRE
The 2013/2014 Israeli Opera season features ten productions and 100 performances from September 2013 to July 2014 performed by leading international and Israeli opera artists at the Opera House in Tel Aviv as well as at the Masada Opera Festival in June 2014 which this season will extend to Acre as well. The season will feature new Israeli Opera productions of Un ballo in Maschera, La Boheme and a new and lavish production La Traviata at Masada. Also in the program are new productions for Israel of Don Pasquale, Prince Igor, Le Contes d'Hoffmann, Czardas Princess as well as revivals of Rigoletto and West Side Story. The hugely successful Israeli Opera Festival at Masada will resume in 2014 for the fourth time, with a magnificent new production of La Traviata. There will also be a semi staged version of Don Giovanni in Acre. The season will also feature numerous non operatic activities, events and series including the annual international dance series, classical music, jazz, world music and children's performances series.
The Opera Season
Prince Igor (October 2013)
The Novaya Opera from Moscow comes to Israel with its classical and most dramatic production of Prince Igor directed by Yuri Alexeev.
West Side Story (November 2013)
The touring American production of West Side Story, conducted by Donald Chan and directed by Joey McKneely, returns to the Israeli Opera after a stunning success four years ago.
The Czardas Princess (December 2013)
The Budapest Operetta Theatre presents its bubbling production of Kalman's fiery operetta at the Israeli Opera directed by Kero and conducted by Laszlo Maklary.
Un ballo in maschera (January 2014)
Danielle Calegari leads a new production of Un ballo in maschera featuring a prominent Israeli cast including Boaz Daniel (Renato), Ira Bertman (Amelia) and Hila Fahima (Oscar).
Don Pasquale (February 2014)
Music Director David Stern leads the Zurich Opera production of Don Pasquale featuring Marco Camastra in the title role and Israeli Hila Baggio as Norina.
Les Contes' d'Hoffmann (March/April 2014)
Frederic Chaslin leads Harry Kupfer's production of Les Contes d'Hoffmann with Gustavo Porta in the lead, Lybov Petrova and Egilues Gutierez alternating as the four heroines and Israeli Vladimir Braun as the four villains.
La Boheme (April/May 2014)
Daniel Oren conducts this new production directed by Stefano Mazzonis and featuring Maria Agresta as Mimi, Giorgio Berugi as Rodolfo, Gabreille Viviani as Marcello and Israeli Alla Vasilevitsky as Musetta.
Rigoletto (May/June 2014)
David Pountney's beloved Israeli Opera production of Rigoletto returns to the stage conducted by young Israeli Daniel Cohen and featuring Carlos Almaguer (Rigoletto), Jean Francois Borras (the duke) and Hila Baggio (Gilda).
La Traviata in Masada (12,14,16,17 June 2014)
Daniel Oren return to Masada leading a stellar cast (Elena Mosuc-Celso Albelo) in Verdi's most popular opera presented in a new production directed by Michal Znaniecki. The festival in Masada also features a special guest concert with the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano (Beethoven 1st and 9th symphonies) on 15 June and a performance by the Idan Raichel Project on 13 June.
Don Giovanni in Acre (19-20 June 2014)
The Israeli Opera Masada International Festival will branch out this June to another UNESCO World Heritage site for a weekend of Mozart at the Crusaders piazza in the old city. Performances will include the Magic Flute for children, a concert with the Mozart requiem and a semi staged version of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Children's Opera Hour
Young audiences can also enjoy the Children's Opera Hour in the foyer of the Opera House, a one hour weekly opera program for young children. The operas are fully staged productions with beautiful costumes, accompanied by piano. Operas include The Magic Flute, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, The Marriage of Figaro, The Elixir of Love and many others.
Israeli Opera International Dance Series
This season the international dance series at the opera house features 9 dance companies from all over the world. Shen Wei Dances Arts will performs The Rite of Spring in late September; Pilobolus will perform Shadowland 25,26,27 and 28 December; American companies Alonzo King Lines Ballet and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet will perform mixed programs of new repertoire in November; Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake will return to our stages in June 2014 after almost a decade; Les Ballet Trockadero de Monte Carlo will return due to audience demand in October 2013; Ballet de Lorraine and Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal will be returning with new programs in February and July 2014.
Israeli Opera Classical Music Series
The Israeli Opera presents several series of classical music with local orchestras and Israeli and international soloists, choirs and conductors. This season, the popular Liturgical Series (with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, and local and international soloists and choirs) will feature four programs including Beethoven's Missa Solemnis, Handels' Solomon, Mendelssohn's Elijah and a double bill of the Faure Requiem and Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms. The Israel Symphony Orchestra Rishon LeZion, which regularly plays in Israeli Opera productions, continues with its Symphonic Series featuring the best of the classical symphonic repertoire led by its music director Dan Ettinger and other conductors. The Israeli Opera also runs five Saturday Morning Opera Highlights concerts, featuring arias, duets and ensemble songs from popular operas performed by outstanding singers from the Israeli Opera. Jazz, world music and classic rock concerts are also part of the Israeli Opera season.
