Gush Halav Stream - Gush Halav - Jish
|
|
Gush Halav Stream is a small seasonal creek (appearing with the rains) in the Upper Galilee adjacent to Dalton Lake in Gush Halav, connecting ultimately with Nahal Dishon. The trail is gorgeous, particularly in winter and spring.
We walked along the bottom of the creek in a circular route (note that there is an additional non-circular route), along which are the remains of an ancient synagogue, the remains of flour mills, springs, orchards, and a stream that meanders gently while families are busy harvesting. The last part of the trail features a challenging ascent with a magnificent view from the very top (you’ll see Mount Hermon, the Lebanese border settlements, and more). It’s worth the exertion!
The trailhead is at the entrance to the village of Gush Halav, also called Jish . Follow the green trail northeast. You’ll pass agricultural plots of fig trees and other crops, eventually nearing Ein Gush Halav. The stream is named after the Second Temple and Talmudic-era city, which was situated there.
Trail level: for the whole family. Most of the trail is very easy, with one uphill section of medium difficulty. The walk will take about 3-4 hours, depending on the number of breaks to rest and wade into the stream along the way.
Trail length: approximately half a kilometer, circular. There is also a route option that is linear; one-way.
Admission: free Handicapped accessibility: not accessible Ideal seasons: fall, winter, and spring. For most of the year, the water flow in the stream is slow and gentle, but during the rainy season you must take note of the amount of water in the stream channel and exercise caution when crossing it. Circular route: Park at the entrance to Gush Halav Village in the parking lot. Walk through the village streets on your way back to your car. Linear route - Dropoff at the plaza at the entrance to Gush Halav Village. Pickup on the Sasa-Rihaniya road shoulder between highway markers 3-4. Relaxation: Most of the trail is exposed to the sun. It is advisable to enjoy the shade of the fig trees during breaks along the way. Make sure to stop and appreciate the ruins of the ancient synagogue.
While you’re there, don’t forget to check out the food and beauty that Gush Halav Village has to offer.
